This month our 5th-grade students dedicated time to writing poems for a special person in their life. Students chose the proper adjective, verb, and simile to describe them. Watching them ponder what makes their person special to them and learn more about them through discussions at home was truly inspiring.
The original idea of our tribute to a grandparent or special person came from Sandra Cisnaros’ poem, Abuelito Who. This poem was written from the memories she had as a child and as an adult in honor of her beloved grandfather. Students eventually presented their heartfelt poems to an audience that included some of the special people in their lives. As one can probably assume, there was not a dry eye in the PAC that day.
We are so honored to have such insightful and expressive students. This was definitely one of our favorite moments of this school year.
