Boys Cross Country 2018 DIAA Division II State Champions
On Saturday, November 10, Tatnall Cross Country concluded their seasons by competing in the 2018 Delaware Division II State Championships. In these races, the Hornets ran against more than twenty-five other teams in the DII/Small Schools classification. Brandywine Creek State Park hosted this year’s meet, which saw 25+mph winds added to the hills and off-camber turns of the 3.1-mile course.
In a race proving that every place and every runner counts in cross country, Tatnall’s boys team, captained by Brendan Balthis ’19 and Sasha Latina ‘19, won the Division II state title by a single point, 43-44, over Delaware Independent Schools Conference rival St Andrews. The relentless duo of Nick Garrett ‘19 (third/16.54) and Brendan Balthis ‘19 (fourth/17.10) both beat the Saints’ first runner to the line, while Joey Cintavey ‘19 (eighth/17.40) broke up a pack of four St Andrews finishers. Declan McDonnell ‘21 (12th/18.08) and Andre Latina ‘22 (17th/18.22) both passed other runners in the final 200 meters to pick up crucial points and keep the DII state title on Barley Mill Road. Sasha Latina ‘19 (25th) and Brett Balthis ‘21 (31st) concluded their seasons with gutty performances for the champion Hornets. With Saturday’s team victory, the Hornets’ have now won the last ten Division II State Championships and thirteen of the last sixteen titles.
