Tatnall XC returned to the Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. This meet featured a day full of collegiate and high school races in the beautiful autumnal setting.
Racing in the Boys’ Brown 5k Varsity Race, Tatnall scored a 13th place finish in a field of 43 teams. Tatnall’s top seven runners featured five seniors, with Nick Garrett ‘19 taking fourth place overall in a time of 15.40, and two sophomores, including Declan McDonnell ‘21, who shattered the 17-minute barrier (16.54), and Brett Balthis ‘21 (18.55), who continued his fall campaign as one of the most improved runners in Delaware.
In the Girls’ Brown 5k Varsity Race, Tatnall ran to a seventh-place finish in the 39-team field. Keelin Hays ‘21 averaged just over six minutes per mile in claiming sixth place in a time of 18.49. Experience proved valuable for the Hornets, as the remainder of Tatnall’s top seven runners were from the junior and senior classes.
In the Boys’ JV race, Tatnall employed a mix of youth and experience to take 22nd place in the 46-team field. Andre Latina ‘22 led the way for Tatnall, running 18.55 as the first of four Hornets to finish in under 20 minutes. On the girls' side, Julianna Barry ‘19 set the standard at 22.19, while Anna Fisher ‘20 set a lifetime personal record for the 5k distance.
With September 2018 in the books, Tatnall XC now prepares to enter the heart of the regular season as both the leaves and the temperatures fall in the transition to October. Competition resumes this Saturday with Wilmington’s own Salesianum Invitational, offering a preview of the 2018 Delaware State Championship course at Brandywine Creek State Park.
