ICE HOCKEY TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Hornet Hockey fans had been waiting all year to see the words “State Champions” next to the Tatnall name. After a convincing 5-0 victory in the Semi-Final against Caravel/Hodgson, Tatnall entered the Championship Game against Appoquinimink as the #1 seed. The high spirits of our young men in the dressing room and pre-game warm-up had the large crowd buzzing early.

Then, almost imperceptibly, Appoquinimink silenced the cheering Tatnall throng with a quick goal only 40 seconds into the game. Appoquinimink followed with another at 4:20 and the first period ended with Tatnall behind 2-0. Tatnall turned the game around in the second but the opposing goaltender thwarted their every advance. Finally, after eleven minutes, sophomore Drew Ianucci found the back of the net and Tatnall was back in the game. The celebration was intense, and you could feel the momentum shifting when, suddenly, Appoquinimink intercepted a pass for a break-away on sophomore Ty Hutchison and neatly tucked in a short- handed goal. The second period ended 3-1 and the teams headed off the ice so the Zamboni could get to work.

Rumor has it that Coach Cardillo had a "moment of inspiration" waiting for the boys in the dressing room. They returned to the ice and continued the domination, scoring at 4:14 and then junior Luke Headman tied the game at 5:25. Now Tatnall was even and in control. At 10:52 sophomore Lain Singer banged in an Ianucci rebound for the lead and clinched the game with an empty netter at 15:21. Hutchison stood on his head in the third, blocking every shot and foiling many scrambles in the crease, saving 38 of 41 shots overall.

Singer was named MVP for his excellent play and game winning goal. Overall Singer had two goals and an assist. Ianucci had a goal and two assists while Headman also contributed a goal. Sophomore Gabe Jensen had two assists with senior Scott Phillips and sophomore Penn Sailer each adding an assist.
