After a long holiday break your Hockey Hornets returned to action this past weekend facing off against two league teams anxious to bring the high flying, undefeated Hornet squad back to earth. First up was A.I. Conrad on Friday night at the Patriot Ice Center and the boys went to work right away. From deep in the corner Lain Singer ’20 passed the puck back to the point where Beau Neff ’19 slid it over to Galen Kelly ’20. From the blue line, Kelly deked around two defenders and hoisted a backhand behind the A.I. Conrad goalie just 54 seconds into the game. A.I. Conrad came back to tie it a few minutes later, but then the boys got down to work. Pen Sailer ’20 took a pass from Singer and fired a shot which was stopped by the goalie, but Singer buried the rebound. Kelly tipped in a shot from Neff at the point for his second and the Hornets lead 3-1 at the end of the first. Luke Headman ’19 popped one in at 1:44 to start the second off right for the Hornets. Kelly fed Jason Roux ’20 at the point to make it 5-1, and it was time for the Singer and Sailer show once again. Sailer racing down the right side got slammed against the boards but managed to sauce a pass to Singer who neatly tucked it in the net. For their next act, Sailer takes it behind the net, slid it out front to Singer who one-timed it high on the stick side. Hornets now led 7-1, but there’s more exciting action to come. Headman corralled the puck in front of the Hornet net, did a spin move to break free of the Rugby scrum taking place and headed down the left side. Headman outskated four defenders and slipped the puck past the goalie while flying through the air, eventually landing on his head. Even Bobby Orr would have been impressed with that recreation of his most famous rush. The second period ended 8-1, and there is only one highlight left for fans on both sides after a goal by A.I. Conrad, Singer set up Kelly for his first High School Hat Trick, and the Hornets ended the game, with a 9-2 victory.
On Saturday the Hornets faced off against the Delco Dragons at Iceworks in Aston PA. Again the boys wasted little time getting down to work by scoring 49 seconds into the game and adding three more before the six-minute mark. The Hornets cruised to an 11-0 victory but there were some pretty plays, and they deserve a little airtime. Singer broke in on the left side, deked the defenseman and slipped it by the goalie. Kelly passed to Reece Ratliff out front for a pretty one-timer and his second goal of the game. This was followed by a Singer pass to Sailer who blasted it by high on the stick side. Will Hemrick scored a pair, including a cruise up the ice, finished with a spin around backhander. Roux created his own two breakaways, scoring both times. Sailer passed to Roux behind the net who slipped it to Singer for a beautiful tic-tac-toe. Hornets scored a couple of goals on point shots from Singer and Albertson. There was a little something for everyone. Except for the Delco fans, unfortunately.
Your Hockey Hornets are next in action at 7:30 pm Saturday at the Patriot Ice Center. Come out and cheer on the Team.
