Tatnall 66, Wilmington Christian 29 - Tuesday, December 11
The Tatnall Hornets Boys Varsity Basketball team traveled to conference foe Wilmington Christian and severely spoiled the Warrior home opener, winning in a rout, 66-29. The Warriors played the Hornets close in the first quarter, but with Tatnall hitting the glass and pounding it inside Tatnall led 10-8 at the end of the first. The Hornet defense began to swarm in the second, however, and Tatnall turned it into a blowout quickly. Outscoring the home team by sixteen points in the frame, Tatnall led 31-13 at the break. Momentum was squarely with the visitors as the half ended, when Rohan Chugh '20 snared a rebound in traffic, found Za'an Burrell '21 with the outlet, and Burrell pushed the tempo and found a streaking Jackson Conkey '21 for the buzzer-beating layup through contact. Captain Robbie Secundy '20 got hot from the outside and splashed a pair of threes in the third quarter, ultimately leading the team in scoring with sixteen points. Captain L.J. Phillips '21 finished with nine points and a game and career-high fifteen rebounds, including five offensive boards. Captain Chris Lazear '20 also dominated the action inside, finishing with six points, nine boards, and two blocks. Burrell scored seven, and Chase Brothers '20 poured in nine of his own. Conkey played his best varsity game, controlling the paint and finishing with seven points, six rebounds, and two assists. Bryce Scott '21 finished with six and snared seven boards. The entire roster got in on the action, and Darien Henderson '22 scored his first career varsity points, grabbing an offensive board and finishing through contact for the traditional and-one.
The JV team secured their first win of the year when Gray Holland '19 broke a 20-20 tie in overtime, converting a clutch and-one, completing the hoop through the harm with only five seconds left. He splashed the free throw and got Tatnall the 23-20 win. Brody Clayton '22 led the team with nine points, including a three-pointer, and Holland finished with six. Ben Mongare '22 hit a clutch jumper to knot the score late in the fourth, and Cameron Mills '20 and Corbin Brumfield '20 both provided incredible energy and passion throughout the win.
The Hornets travel to Salesianum next Thursday, December 20, with JV tipping at 6 p.m. and varsity taking the floor at 7:30 p.m.
