Division 2 DIAA State Semifinals - November 13 at Dover High School Delmar 5, Tatnall 1
Tatnall field hockey made history by earning a spot in the Division 2 DIAA state semifinals on November 13. They played Delmar, a four-time state champion, at Dover High School. The game marked the first time in six years, since before the split of the divisions, that Tatnall had advanced this far.
The game proved to be an exciting one. The Hornets held off Delmar for 23 minutes and 50 seconds before allowing a goal. This was the second-longest scoring drought Delmar had been held to all season. The half ended 2-0 Delmar.
The second half opened, and again the Wildcats were not allowed to score easily. The third goal was allowed three minutes into the second half, followed by a fourth a minute and a half later. But Tatnall never gave up. The attack was able to break through the Delmar defense on several occasions; the attack was able to earn a corner, their only one of the game. Tatnall was able to capitalize on the corner when the ball became loose in front of the Delmar goalie, and Rachael Whitehead ’21 was able to get her stick on the ball and flick it in. This was only the sixth goal scored against Delmar the entire season. At the 15:25 mark, Delmar scored their final goal of the game; the Tatnall defense denied them for the last quarter of the game.
The game proved a defensive game by far. Kyra Ragland ’20 and Evie Hill ’22 each had two defensive saves in the game. Defenders Ellie Hiller ’21 and Holly Brennan ’21 each held down the defense and worked hard to hold Delmar off. Carlie McKenry ’21 had an amazing game in goal, making 21 stellar saves to help in the team’s success.
