Piano, Sound Waves, and Engineering, Oh My!

Submitted by Mary Margaret Wilson, Lower School Music Teacher, 5th and 6th Grade Band Director
This is an exciting time in music class! Second graders are studying the piano keyboard, how sound is produced, and how wavelengths are measured. The students of second grade joined students from Mr. Gates' Upper School Electrical Engineering class in the Innovation and Design Lab in Beekley for a special music class and presentation.
The two groups will be collaborating on a project to design and build mini electric pianos.  The lower school students presented information about pianos, the placement of the keys and the musical notes to the engineering students who will then design and create a piano keyboard that matches their criteria. Music + Science + Cross-Divisional Experiences = The Tatnall Way!
