Specials

Art, music, developmental gym, and Spanish are part of every Preschooler's week. Known as "specials," these classes are led by teachers who are experts in their respective fields who provide students with opportunities for  plenty of hands-on learning and fun. Specials offer an introduction to topics like art history, foreign language and the scientific method, creating the foundation for increased challenges as the children grow academically.

We begin the year with color theory. Students learn about rainbow colors, primary colors and mixing colors using tempura paints, markers, crayons and watercolors. Two-dimensional design projects such as collages and texture rubbings help the children develop creative skills including object placement and pattern designs. Three-dimensional design projects include papier-mâché masks, recycled sculptures and wooden sculptures. Ceramics projects strengthen three-dimensional design skills as the children learn to manipulate clay, making beads, animals, coil bowls and cookie cutter shapes.

Drawing is also a big part of Preschool art. The children develop free expression and learn about observation skills while enhancing fine motor skills. The children learn about the process of duplication through printmaking.

Throughout the year, art history is integrated into the curriculum. Children learn about famous artists, and do projects in the styles of artists such as Picasso, Monet, Michelangelo, Matisse, O’Keeffe and van Gogh. Above all, the children are encouraged to explore, experiment and express themselves.
