In Developmental Gym, the 3- and 4-year-olds begin with the simplest locomotor skills such as walking, running and jumping, and progress to skipping, hopping and galloping. They also work on stretching, bending, twisting and striking. Students learn simple spatial concepts through games such as Cross Over, Star Jumps, Brain Buttons and The Elephant. Hands-on equipment such as beanbags, hula-hoops and various sized balls help promote hand-to-eye coordination and spatial awareness. As they begin to use their whole body, children explore various skills through “skill stations.” The use of music helps to motivate movement and inspire creativity as they pretend to be animals and a wide variety of objects.
Prekindergarten students continue to work on skill development with greater emphasis placed on the concepts of personal space, sportsmanship and teamwork. In Kindergarten, students learn the basics of ball sports such as soccer, basketball, t-ball and tennis in a simplified format.
The children are introduced to the importance of healthy eating through group discussions. Through yoga students learn about stretching and relaxation. For all levels, the culmination of the year is Field Day where the children enjoy outdoor jumping, ball toss and various obstacle course events.
