Music

Music-making at Tatnall begins in Preschool with singing and age-appropriate instruments.

Preschoolers perform at special events such as Founder's Day and May Day. Musical experiences continue through Lower School with choral performances and development of fundamental musical skills including note reading. In Middle School, students have the opportunity to choose a band instrument and join an ensemble, regardless of their experience. A Beginner's Band is composed of novice players. More advanced 5th and 6th graders perform in the Middle School Wind Ensemble, while 7th and 8th graders participate in the Concert Band. Upper School instrumentalists perform in the Symphonic Band and the Upper School Jazz Band. String players participate in Middle School and Upper School string ensembles.

Middle School vocal performance includes 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade choruses. In Upper School, students participate in the Young Men's Chorus and Young Women's Chorus and have an opportunity to audition for the Concert Choir, which has performed internationally. In addition to these ensembles, students often form their own smaller performance groups.

The Music and Multimedia Center allows students to create and record their own electronic compositions, arrange and score musical works, and explore the world of computer-based music technology. High-quality digital equipment allows for professional-level recording of musical performances.
